I found it quite topical reading this book this week. On Monday I got asked to take on additional responsibilities for a large transformational project and whilst there is a significant chunk of systems change, the bigger and more challenging part is the required change in people’s mindset, so everything written in this book is completely relevant!

Many of the leadership ideas and concepts in this book might not be radical or new, but Ingrid has been able to pull them all together in a clear & cohesive way and I found her way of bringing in examples from nature very relevant and meaningful.

For me the one key learning is that we all have to slow down to speed up.

This moment in our history as a species is loaded with immense challenges, but they are not insurmountable and in fact there is great hope. Humble and harmonic leadership, rooted in nature's wisdom, will set the foundation for more harmonic actions to protect our planet for future generations.

Ingrid has practised opening this wisdom for me, my team and many others in her journey. She's now crystallised this wisdom into the book (printed on a gift from our Earth) you now hold in your hands. Treat this book wisely and with love as you would treat your mother. In doing so, we create greater hope in a sustainable and just future for all.

This book teaches us many things: the importance of having a growth mindset; how to gain satisfaction through both achieving bold goals and creating incremental change; how to recognise the dire state of Earth's life support systems while finding hope in things you can control and influence; how to develop meaningful relationships with stakeholders so that they become allies; the importance of spending time in nature.

Ingrid Messner's work has been useful to me and several of my team members in the successful development of our 2030 Sustainability Strategy. I think that many of the ideas in this book can help sustainability professionals be more content and healthier as we struggle to influence others and deliver positive environmental outcomes.

If ever there was a time to tap into the collective wisdom of previous generations across all cultures, it is now. Ingrid has travelled extensively, read broadly and listened openly. Now she has synthesised her wisdom into a comprehensive and easy to understand book. This is a guide for all those who aspire to be more successful leaders, who work with the grain of nature, not against it.

As leaders in sustainability, we are expected to have many skills– be great communicators, collaborators, influencers, storytellers and systems thinkers, all while being self-aware, agile, adaptive, accountable, passionate, persistent, resilient and authentic. The list can be overwhelming.

The beauty of this book is its simplicity and practicality. Ingrid’s ‘wise leadership’ model provides a framework accompanied by tips and tools to hone these skills for both emerging and well-established sustainability leaders at a time when this style of leadership is more important than ever.

I wish I’d had a copy of this book earlier in my career; it certainly would be treasured and well-thumbed!
